The present volume on the middle atmosphere discusses 2D, 3D, and mechanistic models of the middle atmosphere, modeling of planetary waves and sudden warmings, ozone depletion, and dynamics of the polar vortices. Attention is given to observations of constituents and aerosols in the stratosphere, causes and effects of ozone variations, and semiannual and quasi-biennial oscillations and waves in tropical dynamics. Topics addressed include observational studies of the middle atmosphere, radiative processes in the middle atmosphere, new and proposed observations, and the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. Also discussed are simulations of stratospheric warmings in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, laboratory studies of heterogeneous stratospheric chemistry, lidar observations of polar stratopsheric clouds at the South Pole, and a critical comparison of stratospheric models and measurements.
