Uptake and retention of /sup 65/Zn from certain foods
The uptake and retention of /sup 65/Zn from the consumption of oysters collected on the Washington coast near the mouth of the Columbia River, was measured by whole-body counting of a man. The subject was counted in a whole-body counter to establish an initial background count. During the next 20 mo. he ate 81 meals of oysters, an average of about one meal per week. The /sup 65/Zn content of each entire oyster meal was determined. A total of 13 whole-body counts were made during the period. The total /sup 65/Zn ingested by the subject was 709 nanocuries included in 17,430 g of oysters. The maximum /sup 65/Zn body burden attained by the subject was 40 nanocuries. It was concluded that the /sup 65/Zn content in Pacific oysters does not contribute significantly to the radiation exposure of members of the local population.
