On the basis of the two-year evaluation on herbaceous vegetation growth responses can be concluded that all three sludge-fly admixtures were successful in facilitating the establishment of selected grasses and legumes on Blue Mountain. Average percent vegetation cover and dry matter production were the highest on the 2S:1FA mixture. The seed mixture consisting of orchardgrass, tall fescue, and crownvetch exhibited the best performance. The establishment of herbaceous vegetation will help to stabilize the slopes and reduce the amount of erosion and surface runoff that continually carry the trace metal contaminants from the barren mountain into the Aquashicola Creek and Lehigh River. The herbaceous cover will provide the needed immediate protection while methods are developed to return the mountain slope to permanent forest cover. Plans are currently being formulated to proceed next spring (1989) with the application of the sludge-fly ash amendments on additional acreage on Blue Mountain.
