The new layered ternary transition-metal nitride (Fe{sub 0.8}W{sub 0.2})WN{sub 2} has been synthesized in a single-step ammonolysis of the transition-metal oxide precursor Fe{sub 2}(WO{sub 4}){sub 3}. The nitride was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, a = 2.87 {angstrom}, c = 10.96 {angstrom}. The proposed structure consists of alternating layers of MN{sub 6} (M = W: Fe (1: 4)) octahedra and M{prime}N{sub 6} (M = W) trigonal prisms. Four-probe conductivity measurements indicate poor metallic conductivity with a very small temperature dependence.
