Biological shield for insulating pressure vessels

A hollow, biological shield assembly is described which is capable of surrounding and insulating a nuclear reactor pressure vessel. The shield assembly includes a metallic lining attached to a radially inner wall portion of a hollow concrete body, with a layer of thermally insulating material attached to the metallic lining and a plurality of vertical cooling channels also attached to the lining and mounted in recesses formed in the concrete body.
