Ozone-bioindicator Bel-W3 tobacco: leaf fleck development under sprinkler-irrigation and dry-land conditions at Brookings, South Dakota
Uniform environmental growth conditions have been recommended for plants used at different locations as bioindicators for air pollution studies. Ozone fleck development and leaf area of Nicotiana tabacum Bel-W3, a very sensitive indicator for atmospheric ozone, were compared in two field plots located at Brookings, S. D. Tobacco plants in the Plant Science Research Farm were grown under dry-land conditions. At the Pharmacy Garden, sprinkler-irrigation supplied supplemental soil moisture. The irrigated plants were initially visually rated as showing the most severe ozone injury. To provide a more accurate estimate at each location, leaf area was determined and ozone flecks per leaf were counted on 19 leaves and three plants. Measurements were compared with least squares analysis of variance. Irrigated plants produced leaves which were significantly smaller than the dry-land site and had significantly more flecks per cm/sup 2/. However, the environmental differences at the two locations did not result in a significant difference in number of ozone flecks per leaf or per plant. Thus, these data indicate that uniform growing conditions may not be essential for ozone air pollution studies using Bel-W3 tobacco plants.
