A need to maintain and retrieve large amounts of information led an eastern utility to survey available software products for text and image storage. The information to be digitally stored and retrieved included station administrative and technical procedures, current licensing basis documents, technical manuals, and regulatory documents. There were several criteria the electronic document management system had to satisfy. First, it had to be capable of taking document information from multiple formats (e.g., hard copy, MS Word files, WordPerfect files, and Frame-Maker files). Second, it had to display the information on multiple hardware platforms that are connected on the company's digital network. Finally, the application had to provide a user-friendly means of retrieving the stored information.
