Operation and expansion in Piqua, Ohio: development in Baltimore

Two case histories describe district heating systems, one in Piqua, Ohio and one in Baltimore, Maryland. The City of Piqua owns and operates the hot water system as the first of a multi-phase district energy system designed to provide thermal energy to industrial, commercial, and residential energy customers. The program began in 1978 by establishing the feasibility of district heating and cogeneration through retrofit of the power plant. The city is committed to using cogenerated thermal energy as steam for heavy process heat and hot water for space heating and moderate process heating needs. Good program management is providing expansion of the system. Baltimore was selected for an assessment program, which developed two early start projects to recover heat from burning municipal wastes, with expansion planning to incorporate other areas of the city. 2 figures.
