At 5 year old, disc cultivation between planted trees at 6 upland locations in the coastal plain of southeastern USA produced a significant height increase for Platanus occidentalis, Liquidambar styraciflua and Pinus taeda compared to trees grown on wheared (felled) and burned plots, without cultivation, and was essential for adequate survival of the broadleaves. In P. taeda, with cultivation, volume index (dbh/sup 2/ x height) was significantly larger, and fusiform rust (Cronartium fusiforme) incidence was 1.5 to 3 times greater, than on uncultivated plots.
