Phonon anomalies and linewidths in Nb at 10 K

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
The phonon linewidths in Nb at 10 K have been measured in detail by neutron scattering techniques. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical values of the first-principles calculation by Butler et al. The contributions of electron-phonon interactions to the observed linewidths as well as to the anomalies in the phonon-dispersion curves are discussed on the basis of a phenomenological charge-fluctuation model. In addition, strong temperature dependences of the longitudinal-mode frequencies were detected. They are interpreted as indications of a large temperature dependence of the coupling between the monopolar charge fluctuations and atomic displacements.
