Outdoor radon monitoring at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, 1980-1983

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5758836

This report summarizes the results of radon measurements from January 1980 to July 1983 near the former Vitro Manufacturing Plant located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. During this period, radon monitoring was performed on a continuous basis at 40 to 50 monitoring locations surrounding the site. Weekly measurements were made using Passive Environmental Radon Monitors (PERMs) at these locations. In addition, meteorological measurements were made at the same time using a weather station located at the site. The results indicate that increased radon concentrations occur downwind of the site. The maximum off-site concentration measured was 0.93 pCi/L (39-month average). The maximum on-site concentration measured was 3.0 pCi/L (11-month average). Background outdoor radon concentrations ranged from 0.20 to 0.26 pCi/L. Positive correlations were noted between radon concentrations and inverse wind speed and calm periods. A negative correlation was observed between precipitation frequency and radon concentration during weekly monitoring periods.
