The changing international strategic environment has led some to question the need to continue funding the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program - created in the early 1980s to explore promising concepts for effective defenses against ballistic missiles of all ranges. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to discuss the importance of maturing SDI technologies to provide US leaders with nonnuclear defensive options for protecting vital American interests against ballistic missile attack.
