The neutron total cross section for {sup 40}Ar has been measured over the incident neutron energy range 0.007--50 MeV. {ital R}-matrix analysis of the cross section from 0.007 to 1.52 MeV provides resonance parameters which provide a complete description of the neutron scattering functions for the {ital s}{sub 1/2}, {ital p}{sub 1/2}, and {ital p}{sub 3/2} scattering channels and less nearly complete scattering functions for the {ital d}{sub 3/2} and {ital d}{sub 5/2} channels. The back-shifted Fermi-gas model is used to model the level densities for {ital s}-, {ital p}-, and {ital d}-wave resonances.
