Geomagnetic shielding of cosmic rays for different satellite orbits

Journal Article · · J. Geophys. Res.; (United States)
The geomagnetic shielding of cosmic ray particles for satellites can be described by the cutoff probability. This function has been calculated for different orbits, using the world grid of vertical cutoff rigidities by Shea and Smart (1975). The influence of the orbital parameters on the cutoff probability is discussed. Finally, the cutoff probability is used to determine averaged energy spectra of cosmic ray nuclei for some typical orbits.
