Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Army Research Office (ARO), a workshop dealing with thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power technology was held in Durham, NC, in July 1996. This was one of a series of highly focused workshops on key issues associated with the science and technology of advanced power systems. The focus of this workshop was to assess whether TPV is capable of meeting some of the needs of the dismounted soldier as a fighting platform, the Army{close_quote}s {open_quotes}Soldier System.{close_quotes} To accomplish the objectives of the workshop, a group of scientists and engineers, active in the field, from government laboratories, industry, and academia were invited to lecture on a wide range of topics pertinent to TPV. The technical program consisted of plenary, state-of-the-art technology updates and working group sessions covering as wide a range of topics as time permitted. This review is planned to share some of the results and ideas which emerged. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
