The effect of overlap between neighboring spectral lines on the value of the gain in CO/sub 2/ lasers with a pressure of the active medium P> or =0.1 MPa is analyzed using a phenomenological theory of absorption. Results of the calculation are compared with the results of an experimental measurement of the absorption coefficient in CO/sub 2/ at different frequencies with P> or approx. =0.1 MPa. Good agreement is obtained between the theoretical and experimental results over the whole frequency and pressure ranges considered. It is shown that at pressures P = 0.1--0.5MPa maximum gain is obtained on the R12 line of the 00/sup 0/1..-->..02/sup 0/0 transition and not on the R16 line of the 00/sup 0/1..-->..10/sup 0/0 transition as at low pressures.
