Title: Systematics of (. cap alpha. ,/sup 12/C) in light nuclei and implications for multi-. cap alpha. -cluster transfer reactions

The /sup 16/O, /sup 24,26/Mg, /sup 28/Si, /sup 32/S, /sup 40/Ca(..cap alpha..,/sup 12/C) reactions have been studied at E/sub ..cap alpha../=90.3 MeV. The observed cross sections fall off rapidly with increasing target mass (A/sub t//sup -5tsplus-or-minusts1/), consistent with predictions for direct /sup 8/Be or successive ..cap alpha.. transfer employing first-order SU/sub 3/ cluster overlap amplitudes, although other, more complicated mechanisms cannot be excluded. The results are extrapolated and estimates of multi-..cap alpha..-cluster transfer cross sections in heavy nuclei, such as those proposed to synthesize superheavy elements, are obtained.
