Band crossing in /sup 172/Hf

The use of a multiplicity filter to enhance the observation of high-spin states following the /sup 160/Gd(/sup 16/O,4n)/sup 172/Hf reaction has enabled the yrast band to be seen up to spin 22/sup +/. The energy of the 22/sup +/ ..-->.. 20/sup +/ transition is consistent with that predicted recently in a band-crossing calculation.
