Horizontal boring technology, winter 1986/1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5754380
By 1988, two new guided horizontal boring systems developed by GRI are expected to become commercially available to the gas industry. Development of the guided piercing tools and extended-range horizontal boring systems addresses the industry's requirements for short range (up to 120 feet) and longer range (up to 200 to 2000 feet) horizontal boreholes. Based on preliminary economic analysis, the short-range tool can reduce installation and restoration costs of underground natural gas distribution piping by 15 to 50%, compared to conventional trenching, backfilling, and restoration costs.
