Surface analysis of Raney nickel alloys

The University of Pittsburgh used electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), to study the surfaces of several polished Ni/Al (Raney nickel) alloys having different catalytic activities for hydrogenation reactions. In all cases, Al segregated to the surface, the degree of segregation increasing with the bulk concentration of Al. The solid-liquid phase diagram of the Ni/Al system can predict the segregation. Surface free-energy calculations for substitutional pure binary alloys gave qualitative agreement with the empirical results of the Ni/Al system. The lack of quantitative agreement probably resulted from the formation of intermetallic compounds and from oxidation effects. NaOH preferentially leached both NiAl/sub 3/ + eutectic and Ni/sub 2/Al/sub 3/.
