New data on nucleon-deuteron backward elastic scattering in the vicinity of the ..delta..-isobar production threshold are analyzed on the basis of a model proposed earlier )L. A. Kondratyuk and F. M. Lev, Yad. Fiz. 26, 294 (1977) (Sov. J. Nucl. Phys. 26, 153 (1977))). The NN..-->..N..delta.. amplitude in the rescattering term corresponding to the intermediate production of a ..delta.. isobar is calculated within the framework of a model that includes both pion and rho-meson exchange. The relativistic Hamiltonian formalism on the null plane is used for the one-nucleon exchange mechanism. It is shown that taking rho-meson exchange into account in the NN..-->..N..delta.. amplitude leads to a much lower sensitivity of the result to the pion-exchange form factor than does the model with one-pion exchange alone; moreover, it is unnecessary to introduce at the ..pi..N..delta.. vertex a form factor that falls off anomalously fast.
