Process for preparing sulfur-containing coal or lignite for combustion having low SO/sub 2/ emissions

A process is described for preparing a coal or lignite fuel that contains sulfur for combustion wherein reduced amounts of sulfur containing air contaminants are emitted from the combustion. In the disclosed process, the coal or lignite that contains sulfur is pulverized, deeply cleaned, mixed with a finely divided inorganic material, and then formed into briquettes or pellets.
