Midway-Sunset field has passed the billion-bbl production mark, being the fourth U.S. oil field to do so. Previous record breakers were the East Texas field, 3.78 billion bbl; Texas Panhandle, 1.190 billion bbl; and Wilmington, 1.193 billion bbl. Midway-Sunset is in Kern County at the SW. end of the San Joaquin Valley. The field, which averages 3 miles in width, extends from the vicinity of the town of McKettrick SE. along the foothills of the Temblor range for over 25 miles. It has approximately 25,000 proved acres. The field's 75 reservoirs are pretty well defined. Most production is from stratigraphic traps which pinch out to the west on the flank of the Temblor range. Producing sands plunge to the southeast, with several folds crossing the field at oblique angles. Producing formations range from Pliocene to upper Miocene, at depths of 500 to 5,000 ft. Midway Sunset's remaining reserves are estimated at about 200 million bl, based largely on production through established means. But if steam injection and fireflooding continue to hold their hot pace, or if more exotic recovery methods come along, this figure may be revised.
