Chaos and phase lock in long Josephson junctions

Results of extensive digital simulations of a long Josephson junction subject to the presence of dc and RF driving currents are reported. The dynamic behavior of this system is mapped as a function of RF amplitude and frequency of the parameter set which leads to fluxon oscillations in the absence of an RF drive. In response of the RF excitation the junction is shown to exhibit a variety of behaviors including periodic motion in which the fluxon oscillation is phase locked to the RF frequency, chaotic motion in which spatial structure persists, and spatially uniform periodic and chaotic motion.
