Rising energy prices and the elderly

The impact of energy prices on elderly people, compounded by fixed incomes and less efficient housing, has been severe. Statistics compiled by the Federal government show that the elderly poor are increasing their expenditures for home heating at the expense of food and medical care. Unlike most energy users, they have no way to cut costs by reducing their consumption. A list of proposals for government actions (such as weatherization programs, lifeline utility rates, and stronger utility regulation measures) were presented to DOE officials by a delegation from the National People's Action (NPA). DOE responded positively to all the demands except for one omitting nuclear research.
