Solid base-catalyzed reaction of nitriles with methanol to form. alpha. ,. beta. -unsaturated nitriles. 1. Conversion and selectivity

Journal Article · · Journal of Catalysis; (USA)
The synthesis of {alpha},{beta}-unsaturated nitriles from saturated nitriles and methanol was achieved with basic metal oxide catalysts activated by transition metal ions. The methyl or methylene groups at the {alpha}-position of saturated nitriles are converted to a vinyl group. The reaction proceeds via manganese ion or chromium ion, has been found to give the most effective catalytic performance. In the conversion of acetonitrile, the selectivity to acrylonitrile was more than 95%. This method was also useful for the conversion of propionitrile to methacrylonitrile.
