The dispersion measures (DM) of eight pulsars begin to increase systematically as the radio frequency drops below 100 MHz. The corresponding extra delay in the pulse arrival time is compatible with Shitov's (1971) idea that the pulsar magnetic field lines are being twisted; the twist angle would then be proportional to the neutron star rotation rate and to the fourth power of the emission zone's height above the surface. This superdispersion time delay may explain why DM measurements are frequency-dependent. The effect can be avoided by confining measurements of DM to the 100-1000 MHz range. 10 references.
