Effect of two antioxidants on foliar injury and tuber production in Norchip potato plants exposed to ambient oxidants

Journal Article · · Plant Dis.; (United States)

Norchip potato plants were given soil applications of two antioxidants, benomyl and N-(2-(2-oxo-1-imidazolidinyl)ethyl)-N'-phenylurea (DPX-4891), at 3-week intervals during the 1977 growing season in New Jersey. Compared with untreated control plants, DPX-4891 significantly reduced the amount of foliar injury resulting from elevated oxidant concentration, but benomyl did not. Tuber yield, size, and specific gravity were similar, however, whether the plants had been protected with an anti-oxidant or not. The timing of the pollution episode in relation to the formation of the tuber could be an important factor in determining whether the tuber will be affected. 7 references, 2 tables.
