Development of corrective measures technologies for the long-term stabilization of shallow land burial sites in semiarid environments

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5745825
The five-year old field research program involving corrective measures technologies for semiarid shallow land burial (SLB) sites is described. Soil erosion and infiltration of water into a simulated trench cap with various surface treatments were measured and compared with similar data from agricultural systems across the United States. Results of field testing of biointrusion barriers at closed-out waste disposal sites at Los Alamos and in the experimental clusters are reported. The final results of an experiment designed to measure the extent of contaminant transport of the surface of an SLB facility and the influences of plants on this relationship are presented. An experiment designed to determine the effects of subsidence on the performance of a cobble/gravel biobarrier system is described and current field data are presented. 79 refs., 28 figs., 6 tabs.
