Coal liquefaction products. What are the environmental consequences when they are released to inland waters

The authors consider the possible environmental hazards of releases of coal liquefaction products in freshwater systems. Work that has been carried out on the assessment of acute and chronic toxicities of water-soluble fractions of synthetic oils to aquatic organisms is reviewed. The possible effects of insoluble oil components are also discussed. The need for further research is stressed.
