The National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) includes a Task Group responsible for acid deposition assessments, which were required by Congress on a bi-annual basis when NAPAP was established. In 1983, an interdisciplinary team of Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU) faculty and research staff was selected to develop a conceptual framework for integrated assessments (along with a parallel effort by a national laboratory consortium) and later to develop a prototype version of a computer-based assessment model which was recommended. This model, called the Acid Deposition Assessment Model (ADAM), is to be used as a screening tool for longer-term assessment scheduled for 1987 and 1989. Its current status, structure and uses for assessment purposes are the subjects of this paper.
