First offshore production finally within sight

The production of petroleum off Canada's East Coast is discussed. For a nation that began exploring for oil off its East Coast over 40 years ago (Mobil drilled a well from an artificial island off Prince Edward Island in 1944) and has discovered major oil (Hibernia) and gas (Venture) fields, it seems odd that Canada still has no offshore production. Those days are numbered, however, as plans advance for development of both projects. Venture, northeast of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, could come on stream as early as late 1989. Development would involve construction of Canada's first offshore pipeline.
