Two-cycle engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5743262
A two-cycle engine is described comprising: (a) a cylinder block having a cylinder head thereon; (b) a piston received in the cylinder for reciprocal movement; and (c) a port timing control means comprising a port timing control valve which is mounted on the cylinder block and has a timing control surface. The control valve is movable in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder between a closed position wherein the valve is disposed in the exhaust passage with the control surface closing the end portion of the exhaust port closer to the cylinder head and an open position wherein the valve is retracted out of the exhaust passage in a direction perpendicular to the flow of the exhaust gases to open the end portion of the exhaust port. The control surface is of an arcuate concave shape and having a curvature substantially equal to that of an inner peripheral surface of the cylinder so as to be smoothly continuous with the inner peripheral surface of the cylinder in the closed position.
