A unique gas-turbine-powered district-heating and air-conditioning plant serving 4.5 million ft/sup 2/ of government buildings in Sacramento, California, has proven energy-efficient after a decade of operation. The total energy system (TES) utilizes waste heat recovered from gas-turbine exhaust gases to generate steam in a cascading supply until the combined volume can produce enough steam to power a turbine. Six 1000-hp Solar Saturn turbine mechanical-drive units are installed in tandem, with each pair driving a 2100-ton air-conditioning compressor through a double-inlet, single-outlet shaft gearbox. Exhaust heat from each pair of turbines enters a waste-heat-recovery boiler capable of producing 12,000 lb/h of steam, which in turn helps drive a 2650-hp steam turbine powering a 2750-ton centrifugal water chiller. Annual fuel consumption, which amounted to over 610 million CF in 1973, was reduced to 250 million CF by 1977 because of conservation measures taken to reduce building cooling requirements.
