The authors investigated 18KhGNMFL steel (1.3% Mn, 1.3% Cr, 0.8% Ni, 0.25% Mo, 0.1% V), with different carbon contents in the carburized case (0.55-1.1%) and a case depth of about 1.8 mm and of a similar high-carbon steel (eutectic carbon content 0.62%). It was found that the relationship of the contact endurance of the carburized case and the high-carbon steel to hardening temperature is identical. With a hypoeutectic carbon content the contact endurance increases with an increase in austenitizing temperature even if the hardening temperature exceeds the temperature of the upper critical point. This may be explained by the fact that the alloy carbons dissolved in austenite at 900-925/sup 0/C, increasing the degree of alloying of the matrix.
