Unitary hybrid exhaust system and method for reducing particulate emissions from internal combustion engines
This patent describes a system for removing particulate matter from exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. It comprises a main flow passage and a by-pass flow passage for conducting the exhaust gas from an inlet portion to an outlet portion of the system; valve means for selectively directing the exhaust gas through one of the passages; filtering means for filtering the exhaust gas directed through the main flow passage; regeneration means positioned intermediate the valve means and the filtering means for selectively regenerating the filtering means by removing the particulate matter therefrom; an oxidation means positioned downstream of the filtering means in the main flow passage for further oxidizing the particulate matter; and a control means for controlling the flow of the exhaust gas, selectively activating the regeneration means upon sensing of a predetermined condition, and deactivating the regeneration means when the regenerating of the filtering means has been completed.
