Renewable energy for the world's poor

Journal Article · · Technol. Rev.; (United States)

Non-commercial organizations are largely responsible for the introduction of renewable energy sources into rural areas of developing countries, where energy demand is limited to providing basic human needs. The more industrialized of the developing countries were able to meet rising oil prices by lowering oil consumption and borrowing from commercial banks; but the poorer nations, unable to reduce already-minimal consumption levels, turned to multilateral and bilateral agencies for help. Third World criticism of the development community's reliance on Western-type electric power and the special problems of rural areas prompted the search for more appropriate technologies and a cautious funding of demonstration projects of both the transplant and implant concepts. The process of selecting technologies that are locally appropriate and acceptable is made difficult because market forces are lacking. Four criteria are suggested for improving the selection process. 20 references.
