Nuclear war and the global environment

Journal Article · · Environ. Prof.; (United States)

The adverse effects of nuclear warfare are described. The use of even a portion of the current worldwide stockpile of over 50,000 nuclear weapons could lead to: 1) destruction of the earth's ozone layer, 2) dispersal of radioactive fallout, 3) injection into the stratosphere of dust with long-term genetic damage and 4) massive population losses from blasts and secondary fire storms. Environmental professionals can make an important contribution to the growing effort to find acceptable and desirable ways to halt and reverse the nuclear arms race. They have the special experience and knowledge-base needed to articulate the threat to global environment represented by nuclear war. (JMT)
