Four-dimensional supergravity theories arising from superstrings

The low-energy D = 4, N = 1 supergravity theory that arises from the E/sub 8/ x E/sub 8/ heterotic superstring is constructed. The couplings of all massless modes that carry low-energy quantum numbers are calculated by performing a truncation of the ten-dimensional effective field theory in which all heavy Kaluza-Klein modes are discarded. The resulting action is compared to the most general action compatible with the symmetries of the underlying ten-dimensional field and string theory. This comparison indicates which features of the truncation are generic and which can be attributed to the truncation itself. The D = 4, N = 1 supergravity theory consistent with the symmetries is then analyzed. In particular, the general properties of the tree-level scalar potential are derived. One-loop radiative corrections to the scalar potential are considered in relation with the problem of supersymmetry breaking in the observable sector of the theory.
