The authors have carried out a complete determination of the crystal structure of the compound Np(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/2C/sub 10/H/sub 10/N/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ x 2H/sub 2/O (CAD 4 SDP automatic diffractometer). The crystals are triclinic, a = 0.8445 (2) nm, b = 0.9013 (2) nm, c = 1.1870 (3) nm, ..cap alpha.. = 102.56 (2)/sup 0/, ..beta.. = 94.13 (2)/sup 0/, ..gamma.. = 90.75 (2)/sup 0/, space group P1, Z = 1, rho calc = 2.047 g/cm/sup 3/; R = 0.0192/ R/sub W/ = 0.0256 (3071 reflections, 313 variables, refinement by the full-matrix least-squares method in the anisotropic approximation for nonhydrogen atoms and the isotropic approximation for hydrogen atoms). They found and refined 11 of the 12 hydrogen atoms. The compound is a derivative of the hexanitrate complex of Np/sup 4 +/. The basic structural elements are the complex anions (Np(NO/sub 3/)/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/, the cations C/sub 10/N/sub 10/N/sub 2//sup 2 +/ (2,2'-bipyridinium), outer-sphere monodentate nitrate ions, and molecules of water of crystallization. The centrosymmetric complex anion (Np(NO/sub 3/)/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/ is formed by six nitrate ions, coordinated in a bidentate manner to the central Np/sup 4 +/ ion. The Np-O distances range from 0.2477 to 0.2529 nm (average, 0.2504 nm). The Np coordination polyhedron is a distorted icosahedron. The approximate symmetry of the anion is T/sub h/. The 2,2'-bipyridinium cation has a trans configuration; the plane of its ring is turned by 32/sup 0/. The formula of the compound should be represented as (C/sub 10/H/sub 10/N/sub 2/)/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/Np(NO/sub 3/)/sub 6/ x 2H/sub 2/O.
