This paper reports on a comprehensive study of subsea oil and natural gas well blowout-preventer (BOP) performance in the North Sea during 1978-89 that was conducted to identify BOP reliability problems. Evaluations of the BOP as a barrier to blowouts, together with rig downtime caused by BOP failures and malfunctions, showed that BOP reliability has improved significantly during the last few years.
