The effect of the normal-state pseudogap on pair breaking in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates is calculated for a d-wave superconductor with elastic scattering in the unitary limit. The predicted decline in both the superconducting transition temperature and the superfluid density are consistent with recent studies of pair breaking by Zn in underdoped and overdoped Y{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x}Ba{sub 2}(Cu{sub 1{minus}y}Zn{sub y}){sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}}. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
