The relationship of all observables to the reaction amplitudes is exhibited for the reaction y + d {yields} p + n and thereby for all reactions of the y + 1 {yields} 1/2 + 1/2 type. The pure transversity system is used, utilizing a recent formalism for the photon as a pseudo-spin-1/2 particle in the transversity frame. The relationship of the 144 linearly independent observables to the 144 bilinear products of the 12 reaction amplitudes appears in the form of 31 submatrices which are mostly 4-by-4 in size. The results therefore lend themselves readily to the planning of experiments and the exploring of reaction dynamics. In this paper, it is shown how the magnitudes of the amplitudes can be determined with relatively simple experiments, and how similar experiments can provide information on the impact of the deuteron structure on this reaction.
