This paper presents the didactic and experiential benefits gained from an interdisciplinary course at Tufts University entitled The Environment, International Politics, and the Super Powers. The curriculum emphasized bilateral environmental problems faced by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. and included two live television transmissions, linking the students and an expert panel in the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., allowing comparisons of global air pollution and water pollution control. In parallel to the Tufts course, a similar curriculum was offered at Moscow State University, whose students formed part of the audience for the discussions. Soviet representatives included members of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute for the U.S. and Canada. The course was an opportunity for students to compare attitudes and information on health concerns attributable to environmental causes, including nuclear radiation, air pollution, and electrical power generation. Finally, approximately 50 Tufts students visited the U.S.S.R. for a week. the benefit for all students was moving to witness and was a symbol of how to make real the interrelatedness of global environmental issues.
