The performance of an optically pumped submillimeter laser is directly dependent on the infrared (CO/sub 2/) pump used, and the importance of the pump laser in relation to the tuning and stability characteristics has necessitated extensive investigations being carried out on the pump laser. This CO/sub 2/ laser would later be used in conjunction with the submillimeter laser at present being completed.
