Instabilities and chaos in a multimode, standing-wave, CW dye laser

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5734062
Experimental and theoretical investigations of a multimode, standing-wave, cw dye laser have been carried out. The dye laser studied is composed of a standard three-mirror, folded cavity, a single-plate birefringent tuner, and a sapphire dye jet nozzle. The laser spectrum is found to evolve by discrete transitions with increasing pump power, between spectra composed of three stable modes to spectra composed of many modes whose amplitudes fluctuate strongly. The mode structure of the laser is power dependent varying from stable stable, unstable to quasi-continuous.
