An electrical resonator is described comprising a container having outer and inner surfaces. The container has a thin conductive outer layer and being formed substantially of dielectric material. The inner surface defines an internal cavity spaced from the outer surface of the container. The container is provided with an aperture therein for axial communication with the internal cavity of the container. The cavity has bonded on its inner surface an energy state minimizing coating. The container has means for excluding atomic or molecular species from a region of the resonator where r.f. magnetic fields are substantially radial.
