Polarized collider workshop
- Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park, PA (USA)
This volume is a record of the Polarized Collider Workshop which was held at Penn State University, University Park Campus, November 15--November 17, 1990. It contains versions of the plenary and workshop talks given at the workshop as well as several additional contributed papers an summaries of two roundtable discussions. The Polarized Collider Workshop was motivated by the fact that recent progress in the field of accelerator design has made the prospects for studying physics with collisions of polarized protons in a collider setting technical feasible. It was this very real possibility which was one of the main focuses of the workshop. The next generation of high-energy hadron colliders, SSC, LHC, and RHIC will all be scientific projects of immense scope for which much theoretical, experimental, and technological groundwork must be laid. The purpose of the meeting, then, was to bring together interested people in the various necessary fields, theoreticians, experimentalists, and machine/accelerator physicists to discuss the physics case that could be made for polarization options at such machines and their technical feasibility. Sessions devoted to the theoretical understanding of the EMC experiment and to resolving any remaining technical disagreements in its interpretation were a large part of the program. Such discussions form a necessary background to assess the current views on the spin structure of the proton. Presentations of future prospects for polarized lepton-nucleon scattering experiments and technical discussions of polarization techniques for hadron accelerators also formed an integral part of the workshop agends. But the majority of the talks dealt with the physics prospects available at a polarized collider. We reproduce here the talks given in both the plenary and parallel/workshop sessions of the meeting.
