Studies in the BNL 21-GeV/c negative-hyperon beam. I. sigma. and. xi. production and asymmetry in the decay. xi. /sup -/. -->. lambda pi. /sup -/

In the Brookhaven National Laboratory 20.8-GeV/c negative-hyperon beam, we have measured the production ratios ..sigma../sup -//..pi../sup -/, ..xi../sup -//..pi../sup -/, and ..sigma../sup -//..xi../sup -/ by 29.4-GeV/c protons incident on A1 and A1/sub 2/O/sub 3/ targets. We have also measured the asymmetry parameter in the decay ..xi../sup -/ ..-->.. ..lambda pi../sup -/ and find ..cap alpha../sub ..xi../-=-0.49 +- 0.04.
