The Velsicol Chemical Corporation (VCC) is a manufacturing facility located in east-central Illinois, approximately one mile north of the City of Marshall, Clark County, Illinois. A total of 334 acres onsite are leased for crop farming. VCC was in operation between the mid-1930s and August 1987, and occupied an area of approximately 420 acres, 172 of which were used for production or disposal practices for petroleum derivatives including resins, solvents, and pesticides, including chlordane manufacturing. All process waste water has been deep-well injected onsite since 1965 and the majority of the waste solids and sludges generated at the facility were disposed of in Pond 5/6 until 1980 when the firm ceased operations. Accidental and intentional offsite releases of wastes were noted during the period the ponds were in operation. In the 1980s, all contaminated soil and visually contaminated sediments were consolidated and stabilized with cement and fly ash, and covered with a temporary clay cap and vegetation. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil, sediments, surface water and ground water are VOCs including benzene and other organics including PAHs and pesticides. The selected remedial action for the site is included.
